“To Communicate and To Connect Japanese History:The Past and Future of the Historiographical Institute, the University of Tokyo” Held

On February 15-16, 2024, the Historiographical Institute (HI), the University of Tokyo held the second University of Tokyo New York Office (UTokyoNY) event for fiscal year 2023, “To Communicate and To Connect Japanese History: The Past and Future of the Historiographical Institute, the University of Tokyo” at the UTokyoNY.

Our institute has conducted research and collection of historical documents for 150 years, compiled and published key collections of historical documents, and published and disseminated its accumulated academic information and research results in Japan and abroad. However, international recognition and understanding of our institute are still insufficient. This event was conducted in a hybrid format of face-to-face and Zoom, introducing each activity and the process of restoration of cultural properties and research results, including the restored “Ochiai Saheiji Michitsugu Back Flag (Ochiai Saheiji Michitsugu Sebata)” and the colour pictorial reproduction of “Nagashino Kassen Folding Screen Underpainting (Nagashino Kassen Byobu Shitae)” with displays.

The event was well received, with 11 on-site and 137 online participants on both days. In a survey conducted after the event, many participants expressed their wish that the event would be held again, and we recognized the importance of our activities to disseminate information about the HI overseas.

The HI continue its research activities, conducts new research in collaboration with researchers from across the country and world, and further develops as the institute opens to the academic community and society. It also continues to promote efforts for further international development and recognition of the institute based on the experience and feedback gained through the UTokyoNY event. We look forward to your continued support in these endeavors.
