In 2021, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology/Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo signed a partnership agreement with Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture, a core city in the Kumano region, which is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in Japan. Along with this, we are conducting a wide variety of events like academic forum, symposium, seminar, excursion etc. As our event abroad for the first time, we would like to hold a seminar at UTokyo NY on 17.03.2023, in order to promote Kumano internationally as one of the most fertile fields for Humanities. Some experts of Kumano will introduce and explain variable attractive aspects of Kumano. We will also re-enact the storytelling ritual, E-toki, of the painting “Nachi Sankei Mandala (Nachi pilgrimage map mandala)”, which was held by a woman, called Kumano Bikuni, who travelled around Japan in order to advertise Kumano since the Middle Ages. E-toki is a kind of a fund-raising practice using a painting for shrines and temples in Japan in pre-modern period.
